Education and Freedom in Contemporary America

An introduction to the New York Encounter 2011 with keynote speaker, John GARVEY, President of Catholic University of America; welcome address by, Chris BACICH, US Coordinator of Communion and Liberation; and master of ceremonies, John TOUHEY, screenplay writer and movie director.

Following the introduction the Xaverian Jazz Band will perform.

Education is the essential factor for proposing the Catholic faith and for promoting a free and healthy society. Freedom of education is, therefore, absolutely relevant for the purposes of both developing one's identity and living one's faith in the public square. This is also – precisely - New York Encounter's main goal: offering to a large and interested audience opportunities for education by looking with openness, curiosity, and critical judgment at various aspects of reality. As the President of one of the most prestigious Catholic and academic institutions in the U.S., where freedom of education stands at the core of its own existence, Dr. Garvey will offer from the "front lines" some insights on education and freedom in the broader context of contemporary America. We could not have hoped for a better opening on this issue so dear to the New York Encounter!
